Some of you will be familiar with the cult like status the Classics Club ™ attained in its all too brief history a few years ago. Founded on the bravery to admit you may have never watched Birth of a Nation or Citizen Kane or read Camus or John Updike or listened to Pet Sounds or Bitches Brew, the Classics Club ™ addresses these cultural blindspots.
Every month a member chooses a classic movie, book and album that he or she or them has never watched, read and listened to. The rest of the group can do one or all, depending on their own gaps in knowledge. No pressure to meet or discuss, it’s a personal thing but erudite conversations normally flowed.
It seems more urgent than ever in these times of disposable, shallow social media (the average Instagram user scrolls the equivalent height of two Big Bens a day), depressing politics, creeping xenophobia and racism that we use our time wisely and nourish our souls.
